    Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram on Pamban Island of Tamil nadu. He was born to father Jainulabdeen and mother Ashiamma. His Father was a boat owner and imam of a local mosque and his mother Ashiamma was a housewife. Kalam was the youngest of four brothers and one sister in his family. By his early childhood, Kalam’s family had become poor; at an early age, he sold newspapers to supplement his family’s income.

    Kalam had average grades in his early school years. He spent hours on his studies, especially mathematics. After his school education in Ramanathapuram, Kalam went to Tiruchirappalli for attending his college, he joined in saint Joseph’s College. He moved to Madras in 1955 to study aerospace engineering in Madras Institute of Technology with the passion of joining in IAF. He missed achieving his dream of becoming a fighter pilot, as he got placed ninth in qualifiers, and only eight positions were available at that time.

    Education and Work

    In 1960 after graduating from the Madras Institute of Technology, he joined in DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) for Aeronautical Development Establishment. Kalam started designing small hover craft at his earlier stage of carrier. He was not convinced with his work in DRDO, he was also in the part of Indian National Committee for Space Research working under Vikiram Sarabhai the famous space scientist. Kalam was transferred to ISRO at 1969 as the project director of India’s first Satellite Launch Vehicle.

    From July 1992 to December 1999, Kalam served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the DRDO. He was the country’s best known nuclear scientist. Kalam served as the 11th President of India.

    Post presidency Kalam became a visiting professor of several educational institutes and an honorary fellow of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

    On 27 July 2015, Kalam travelled to Shillong to deliver a lecture on “Creating a Livable Planet Earth” at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. That was his last day. On 30 July 2015, the former president was laid to rest at Rameswaram Ground with full state honours. Over 350,000 people attended the last rites, including the Prime Minister.

    Pioneering Work in Defense and Aerospace:

    Contribution to the Pokhran-II Nuclear Tests:


    Dr. Kalam played a crucial role as the Chief Project Coordinator during India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998. These tests established India as a nuclear power.

    He spearheaded various missile programs, including the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP), which led to the development of Agni, Prithvi, Akash, and Nag missiles.

    President of India (2002-2007):
